New York, USA

So you’re planning to go to The Big Apple!! While there is a wealth of information and things to do in New York, I’ve decided to put together a little list covering things you may (or may not) know exists in this amazing city that I loved. Being born and raised in London, New York was not daunting for me as I am used to the hustle and bustle of a busy city; however not everyone is the same and so I thought I’d try help make things a little less overwhelming.

 1. Of-course the first thing I’d suggest is the Empire State Building! I’ve been to the Empire State Building three times (trust me once is enough), but each time I’ve been New York it’s been with someone who hasn’t seen it *sighs*.

The famous building stands at a whopping 443 meters tall with construction starting in 1930. Getting there is so simple, you can hail a taxi, grab an uber or use the subway (lines 1,2 and 3- get off at 34nd Street – Penn Station or lines 4, 5,6 and 7- get off at Grand Central Terminal). The main attraction naturally is the views from the top- tickets to the 86th Floor observation deck will cost you $42.00 and the 102nd Floor will cost from $72.00. Once you are finished at the top, your ticket will grant you entry to some of the galleries, which has the history of the building and famous celebrities who have visited.

 2. Go to a comedy show! On my first night in New York I had no plans for that evening so me and my friend just walked around Time Square but this was great as we ended up getting free tickets to a comedy show (you will have to buy 2 drinks in the venue- but cocktails are as cheap as $8). The comedians are usually are up and coming talent and the venue could do with a bit of TLC but overall, I had tears and I’m pretty sure I walked out with a full 6pack. If you like, dark/ dirty/ unfiltered comedy then LOL comedy club (711 7th Ave #2nd, New York, NY 10036) is great; however, there are plenty of places to choose from.

3. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge. This one is great because you can use it to get great views of New York and photo opportunities.

Watch out because the cyclists are ruthless! I saw more than a few people nearly get hit by bikes for walking in the wrong lanes. There are also typically merchants selling souvenirs and artists doing caricatures. To get there take the A or C train to High street/ Brooklyn Bridge stop, walk through the park and follow the signs but it is hard to miss.

4. Visit Flip ‘n Toss! All I can say is OMG- you will not disappointed. Famous for their mac n cheese (my favourite), this was high on my list. The shop is quite small with only a few tables inside, but they do deliver and do collections. Their opening times vary so follow them on Instagram @flipntossnyc to make sure you aren’t disappointed (I believe they’re closed on Mondays).

5.Sticking with food, if you have a sweet tooth Junior’s will be your best friend! The sheer amount of cake types is enough to send you into a coma, they have everything from cheesecake to birthday cake, cupcakes to pies. In addition to cake, they also have a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner available for dine in.

6. Time Square! Whether you visit at day or night, there will be something to entertain. There are plenty of talented people showing of their skills in Time Square – stop and cheer them on (don’t forget to tip); as well as shopping galore.

Things to note: Be wary of those in costumes as they will charge a hefty price for a picture with them, it is not worth it. Venture down the little side roads- you will find a lot on non-commercial restaurants and diners. Compare ticket prices before purchasing from the street vendors (sometimes Broadway tickets will be cheaper at the venue- do not let them pressure you into buying on the spot). Keep an eye on pockets and bags, as with any big city pick pockets make their living off you not being cautious. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT take an uber or taxi through Time Square; the traffic is something else and you will be charged handsomely for it. Lastly, put your phone down and just take it all in!!

7.If you are lover of Marvel, DC and all things comics, then Midtown Comics is for you! I visited the Time Square branch (200 W 40th St, New York, NY 10018) but there is also one by Grand Central. I honestly got lost and spent way more than necessary but with first editions, special editions, buttons, pins, bags, action figures and more I couldn’t help myself.

8. Venture to the Upper West side to go to Metro Diner (2641 Broadway #1, New York, NY 10025).

Boasting checked floors, red booths and BIG portions, this diner really gives that retro feel while providing good home cooked classic meals. The best thing about this diner is the waitresses, they were all so lovely and had the thick New York accent which just made the experience even better, as we went back and forth pronouncing random words.

9. Take a train over to New Jersey. On my third visit I flew into Newark and booked to stay in New Jersey for my time there, but my Junior’s cravings (see point 5) got the better of me and I just needed red velvet cake ha-ha! I decided to get a train over into New York as it only cost me $10.50 return and I was in New York within the hour. If you are in New York and are wanting to explore New Jersey, you have the option of PATH subway, the ferry or transit train (my choice). Personally, after using the transit train I’d suggest taking the ferry for the views ($9 one way) or PATH for speed and cost ($2.75 one way) but all three gives you the freedom to explore another state. Newark is very different to Manhattan, with a more chilled/ laid back vibe- a lot of museums, art galleries and cathedrals if that is more your vibe.

10.Lastly, visit Tonic Bar (734 7th Ave, New York, NY 10019) for a night full of sports, drinks and Karaoke. This was a spare of the moment visit for me. I just needed to kill time and stay warm before meeting a friend, but we ended up staying until closing lol. The drinks were cheap and strong, the karaoke was hilarious, and the wings hit the spot after many cocktails. Only downside were the toilets, I had to run into the men’s because the que for the ladies was just too long.

There is so much to see and do in New York, this merely scratches the surface, but I wanted to help showcase things that aren't necessarily known, as well as main tourist attractions.
